5 Common Problems Found When Fixing Roofs

Your roof is an important part of your home, yet it is often the most neglected one. Your roof offers a significant role in keeping your home protected against pests and the outside elements. It keeps your home insulated and provides your home with curb appeal. You get so much from your roof,  therefore, it is essential that you keep it in good shape all the time. To make sure that your roof is in tip-top condition, you need to get your roof inspected regularly.

Roofing maintenance

Your roof, like any other parts of your home, is built to withstand daily wear and tear, especially the harsh weather condition, but because it is constantly exposed, it can get damaged. A roof inspection should be done to check if there is any damage that needs to be repaired or if your roof needs a replacement. If you think that your roof is old and shows many signs such as leakages, cracked shingles, or a sagging roof, it is an excellent time to consider replacing your roof as it can pose a serious problem later on.

Fixing your roofs

Replacing your roof can be a good option, especially if your room is nearing its lifespan and you have the budget for it. Whether you like it or not, a roof replacement is an expensive home project that needs a sufficient budget. If your roof shows signs of being damaged, yet you don’t want to replace it yet because of budget constraints, it is a good idea to have it repaired first. Sometimes, a roof problem can be fixed by a simple repair. You get to fix your roof without spending a lot of money.

When fixing roofs, whether you do it yourself or hire a professional roofer, there are common problems you may encounter. Here are five common issues found when fixing roofs:

  • Unwanted plants

Moss looks great, especially in the shady corner of your yard but not on your roof. If there is moss on your roof, there is trapped moisture which means your roof is likely to get ruined later on. Get rid of the moss in your roof and make sure to get to the root problem to prevent further problems.

  • Flashing cracks

Skylights and chimneys have flashings to seal the seams of the roof from rain and the weather. When repairing your roof, you might get to examine these flashings. Make sure there are no cracks or breaks as it could often lead to leaks. If your flashing is made of roof cement, change it to a metal flashing system. It’s more durable and lasts longer.

  • Damaged shingles

Shingles should lie flat against the roof. If there are patches that are cracked or damaged, they should be repaired immediately.

  • Gutter problem

When repairing your roof, check your gutter system and make sure it is in good condition. Gutter problems could lead to water damage which can be a serious problem.

  • Soffit

Check the wood beneath the roof overhang. Look for cracks, holes, and rooting because insects and other small animals are attracted to this area.

Most homeowners don’t put importance on their roof unless it springs a leak. Don’t wait for it to happen, have your roof checked regularly to prevent costly damage.
