Do I Need a New Roof?

Your roof is an essential structure in making your home safe and secure. But let’s admit it; most of us do not regularly check our roofs and do not know when to replace it.

While most brands today promise to last for several years, it still depends on several factors, including your location and the type of climate. So in this post, what we will share with you are the common signs that you need to replace your roof. That way, you will always have the assurance that your home is safe.

  • Your Roof is More than 20 Years Old

As we’ve said, most manufacturers offer products that could last for decades. But that doesn’t mean you should maximize its lifespan. In some cases, its deterioration happens faster than what is expected. The weather could be one of the factors. Also, improper ventilation could result in premature aging of your roof.

  • It Looks Worn Out

It won’t take you hours to check the appearance of your roof. By its overall appearance, do you think it looks worn out and old?

If yes, you might want to consider changing it. It’s more than just the aesthetic value of your home. These are signs that your roof is not good enough to withstand extreme weather conditions.

  • The Shingles are Curled

See if your shingles are cupping or curling. Take a quick check if the center of your shingle is concave or if the edges are turned up. These are indications of aging and wear from the changing weather. Also, the temperature plays a huge role since it could cause the asphalt to shrink. As a result, it will become brittle.

Take note that you should never walk on curling shingles.

  • Bald Patches

The solid granules on your shingles are the first line of defense against the harmful rays of the sun. Now, if you see bald spots, it may be time to replace it. But, not doing it might cause leaks and other issues inside your home. And if that happens, you need to spend more.

  • Watch Out for Dark Streaks and Moss

If you must know, airborne algae can cause dark lines. It will not bring your roof any immediate harm, but that could affect the overall look of your home.

Moss, on the other hand, can grow if your roof doesn’t get much sunlight. When you live in moist climates, this can happen. Over time, it can damage the granules, most especially in freezing conditions.

  • Others Are Changing Their Roofs

You should also observe if other homes in your community are changing their shingles. This is especially true if your homes are built during the same period. Your shingles are likely to experience the same type of conditions, and seeing that your neighbors are changing theirs is a good indicator that you should consider doing the same.

Ask the Experts

If you see some signs of aging in your roof, it’s best to call professionals. They could determine if you need to change the whole roof or if you just need to replace the damaged shingles. Doing so on your own could be more costly, so it’s best to leave this task to the experts.
